Andrew Carmichael, P.Geo, Senior Geologist, and Steve Blower, P.Geo., Vice President of Exploration, IsoEnergy Ltd.

    Talk Abstract:

Located along the fertile Larocque conductor trend, IsoEnergy’s Hurricane zone is a new discovery of high-grade unconformity-related uranium mineralization in the northeastern Athabasca Basin of Saskatchewan.  The Hurricane zone was discovered with IsoEnergy’s first drill hole (8.5m @ 1.3% U3O8 in drill hole LE18-01A) on the Larocque East property, just 10 weeks after the property was acquired.

Located 320m below surface, mineralization is polymetallic (U, Ni and Co) and straddles the sub-Athabasca unconformity or is perched in the sandstone immediately above it. Anomalous concentrations of uranium and uranium pathfinder elements have been intersected throughout the sandstone pile in several drill holes.  Similar to many Athabasca uranium deposits, mineralization is strongly structurally controlled and is spatially related to the intersection of graphitic fault zones with the unconformity.  At Hurricane, brittle reactivation of east-west oriented fault zones has created a subtle ridge in the basement, the top of which is the preferred location for uranium mineralization.  A total of 53 drill holes have now been completed by IsoEnergy in the general vicinity of the Hurricane zone which has grown to at least 575m long, up to 40m across, and up to 11m thick.  The best intersection to date is 8.5m @ 34% U3O8 in drill hole LE20-34, including 5.0m @ 57% U3O8.

The target for the discovery drill hole was the unconformity beneath a zone of sandstone alteration and elevated uranium geochemistry in historical drill hole KER-12, located immediately east of the western property boundary along the Larocque conductor trend.  The trend hosts significant uranium mineralization at the Larocque Lake zone and the Larocque North zone, both of which are located on the neighboring property to the west.  Although several features contributed to the top tier ranking of the target, its location along the Larocque trend, proximal to weak uranium mineralization in several drill holes was paramount.

The Larocque East property encompasses approximately 15 km of the Larocque conductor trend, of which the western half is characterized by highly illitic sandstones above strong basement conductors that are only sparsely drilled.

    Talk Abstract:

Explorationists continue to use imaging technology more and more to better understand the subsurface. Geophysical technology is routinely applied to most exploration activities. One technology that has been around for a very long time, but until recently has seen relatively little use in mineral exploration, is magnetotellurics, often referred to as MT.  The MT method of obtaining deep resistivity information from the subsurface was first practically implemented in the 1950’s. Since that time its applications have been mostly academic, but more recently, thanks to significant advancements in computing power and inversion methods for dealing with the complex data collected, there has been a significant increase in the use of the technology for nearer surface exploration.

In 2006, an Australian government MT transect highlighted the significance of regional information when it showed very significant features lying deep below the world class Olympic Dam mine. The features potentially highlight deep mineral emplacement conduits and structural pathways that may provide prospective terrains for ore exploration. More recently the Metal Earth program based out of Laurentian has embarked on similar deep mapping programs to collect deep transect information over the Red Lake and Timmins camps. Mining companies, both Majors and Juniors, are routinely utilizing the technology for prospecting the top 2000m of the subsurface.

The purpose of this presentation is to provide a brief overview of the history,  development, and practical use of MT.  The presentation will cover how the technology works, field survey logistics & costing, and practical examples of survey results from several geological environments including porphyry, massive sulphide, vein systems, as well as minesite applications.  Attendees should leave with an understanding of the  the technology, how it can be effectively used, and perhaps some ideas of how to incorporate it in their specific exploration programs.
