Tailings Management Overview for Exploration Geologists

Talk Abstract:

The presentation will provide an overview of tailings and tailings management, primarily for an exploration geology audience. Topics will include: 1) basics of tailings and tailings facilities; 2) brief case histories of tailings facility failures; 3) elements of good tailings management; 4) international frameworks such as Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) and the new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM); and 5) the role of exploration geologists in tailings facility site selection and characterization.

Speaker Bio:

Dave Eden is a geological engineer with an affinity for geology, having previously worked in the Kinross Technical Services geology department, and he has an M.Sc. in geology from the University of Toronto.
